We had great fun creating our very own volcano. While having fun we also learned that the red lava (food colouring) was the result of a chemical reaction between the baking soda and vinegar. In this reaction, carbon dioxide gas was produced, pressure built up inside the plastic bottle until the gas bubbled out of the volcano. This was a good representation of what happens in real volcanoes.
