Science Experiments

We carried out a number of experiments last week.

(1)          The Monster Toothpaste Experiment

We placed the empty bottle in the centre of the table.  In a small jug we mixed together some yeast and warm water. Use a funnel we poured a 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide into the bottle. We added some food colouring and a squirt of dishwashing liquid.  Then we added the yeast mixture to the bottle.  The monster toothpaste rose up and oozed out of the bottle.

(2)         Mentos and Diet Coke

It’s an old trick: we dropped a Mentos into a bottle of Diet Coke and “whoosh” a sticky brown geyser shoot up out of the bottle.  We tried it with both diet and full sugar cokes. It worked with both, but the diet coke produced a bigger reaction.  We tried it with sprite and lemonade. Both worked.  We also tried it with coloured mentos and mint Mentos.  Again, both worked.

(3)         Lava Lamp
To make our lava lamp we filled a jar three quarters of the way with vegetable oil.  We filled the rest of the bottle with water that had been coloured with food colouring.  We closed the jar lid tightly.  Waited for the two layers to settle.  We broke the Alka-Seltzer tablet into small pieces.  Dropped small pieces of the tablet into the bottle to create a bubbly fizzy lava lamp.
