This month was a bit different in third and fourth class, we had a new teacher in for three weeks to teach the class

1916 Rising

We learned a lot about the 1916 rising this month in class to prepare for the delivery of the Tricolour and the Proclamation after mid-term. We even used the song ‘On the one road’ from the time of the rising for our party piece. In English we pretended we were there during the time of the rising, and wrote some excellent diary entries about what we saw during the rebellion.

Halloween

We learned a lot about Halloween this month before we broke for our mid-term break.  We talked a lot about the celebration in English, we even created our own scary characters and made spooky magic potion recipes. In art we created our own version of Edward Munch’s ‘The Scream’, we used blow pint to created crazy hair too. In Irish we learned all about dressing up as a púca (ghost), fathach (giant), cailleach (witch) and other Halloween characters.  We learned all about Halloween traditions around the world and the different ways people celebrate the festival.

Did you know…

  • In Czechoslovakia, people sit in chairs around the fireside. Everybody has two chairs, one for themselves and one for their spirit.
  • Halloween is known as ‘La Fete d’Halloween’ in France, which means the festival of Halloween.
  • In Spain, Halloween is a three day long festival which involves lots of dancing and street parties.

Friendship

This month was friendship month in school; we did lots to learn about being friendly and caring for ourselves and others. Our friendship display was an accumulation of all our names to show how we are all friends within the class.

In PE we did lots of collaborative games which meant we had to work together to achieve a goal, our favourite game was ‘The Human Knot’!

In SPHE we worked a lot on friendship, we made paper dolls to see how it would feel if we were ever hurt by other people. We also made our own individual crests which celebrated who we are as individuals but also what we like to do with our friends.

During religion we spoke about how all our friends are unique, we drew portraits of each other to display for everyone to see.

We even looked at friendships in art, we each created a phoenix feather, and together with all our friends we created the entire bird!

Maths

We did lots of work on Data and Shapes this month.  The very first day we had a ‘Break In’, we had to work as Data Detectives to figure out who broke into our school for extra homework! We figured out it wasn’t anybody in our class though!

We also took a trip to Mary Immaculate College in Limerick for Maths Day. We had loads of fun doing all the different activities; we even played who wants to be a Millionaire! We did orienteering stations and logic games too.

We did lots of work on shapes throughout the month, we learned the difference between 2D and 3D shapes, we used 2D shapes to create some beautiful art and we created 3D shapes ourselves using paper and tape.

Tree Day

For National Tree Day, our class along with the fifth and sixth went to Curragh Chase. We saw lots of different kinds of tree and saw how to identify them using their leaves. We saw that ‘Sammy Squirrel’ lives in an oak tree, we hid underneath the long weeping branches of a willow tree and we collected lots of different leaves and seeds for our display in school.
We had some great helpers during the day telling us all about the park and the different trees to find there. We also learned about bats and even had the chance to touch one!

October was a busy month in our class, Mid-term was a well deserved break for all the hard-working students!
