Hallowe’en Horrors!

Hallowe’en came early to Glin this week, with the pupils of St Fergus’ N.S. partaking in lots of fun filled learning activities based on the Spooky Season. We had art work in all of the classrooms right through the school which added to the scary atmosphere. From the Ghosties in Infants, to the skeletons in First and Second Class and the haunted houses of Third and Fourth Class, each child was creatively engaged in the theme of the week. Fifth and Sixth Class were to be found in the Halla, partaking in Hallowe’en based Drama activities-not many outsiders were brave enough to enter in order to see what was going on, but the fun and laughter was plain to be heard (as well as a few blood curdling howls!!!).

Senior Classes were kept on their toes on Thursday afternoon, with a Hallowe’en Quiz. The result was close, going to a tie-breaker, based on questions about Glin. The winning team of Maurice, Ella, Darragh, Nathan, Louise and Agata were presented with their goodie bags and certificates at the Good New Assembly on Friday. Thanks to all of the teachers for their hard work in organising and correcting the answer sheets.

First and Second class learned alot this week about El Dia de los Meurtos-The Day of the Dead. This is the Mexican celebration of Hallowe’en.It was great fun learning about the parades and brightly adorned altars that the Mexicans build to remember their loved ones who have passed on. They made beautifully decorated skulls as part of the lesson. People in Mexico wear these type of masks to celebrate this fun holiday.

Friday was the highlight of the week, with pupils coming to school in their Hallowe’en costumes.Everyone (even the teachers!), made a great effort and it was great to see such participation by the whole school body. We had everything from pirates to pumpkins, skeletons, to scarecrows!  Ms O’Hanlon’s Infants treated us to a marvellous Party Piece which involved “Púcas”, “Cailleachs” and some funny “Ghosties Bouncing on the Bed”. Hallowe’en games followed in the classrooms and the evening was rounded off with each child taking home a trick or treat party bag, kindly donated by the Parents Council.

Happy Hallowe’en to one and all!
