Curragh Chase LEAF Day

On Thursday 9th February 2017, Rang 1-Rang 4 visited Curragh Chase courtesy of L.E.A.F.-Learning About Forests. This was a follow on trip from our visit with Rachel Geary last month. It is also part of our ongoing efforts to maintain our Green Schools Status.

We left the school, by bus, at 9:30am, praying that the day would stay dry! Thankfully it did-for the most part. Rachel and Ray met us on site and we were divided into groups. During the course of the day we walked around the forest park and we did lots of fun things. We learned how to measure the height of a tree from the ground, we measured the circumference of a tree and we also learned the name of many species of native trees and how to identify them. We also, now know how to tell the age of a tree by looking at the inside of it.

It got very exciting when we participated in active learning. We made our own necklaces and even constructed shelters using what we could find in the environment. Bear Grylls would be so jealous!

The day ended with a well earned trip to the playground where we enjoyed a spin on the roundabout and a swing and slide! We returned to school at 2:30pm, safe, dry and happy! Another great day for the annals.
