Water Explorer

Without water there is no life. The world’s fresh water is under threat. People around the world need to make every drop count – filling our future with water for all.

To help us understand this threat and highlight how we in St. Fergus can help – Una from the Water Explorers team paid us a visit.

Water Explorer is a fun, inspiring and educational programme that empowers thousands of students across the world to lead joint action on water issues for their schools and communities.

Water Explorer supports 8 -14 year olds on a student-led mission to rescue our waterful world. Water Explorers are supported to complete water-based challenges on key water issues. There are 272 teams involved and we are very fortunate to be one of them!

There are four main challenges each with sub challenges.  They are: Fresher Water, Global Water, Secret Water and Precious Water.  We completed our very first challenge with Una’s help. In groups, we discussed how we use water in our daily lives.  We investigated the water-wasting problems in our homes by carrying out a survey in all the classrooms.  Using this data, we created a water pathway at school full of water-saving tips and pledges. This was under the Precious Water section.  These footprints will be displayed along the corridor for all to see to remind people of the scarcity of water and the need to conserve it.

To see if our Water Footprints will make a difference, we will carry out the surveys again in a few weeks’ time.  We will ask the same number of students to take the survey. We will compare our before and after results and use the resources given to us by the Water Explorer team to help us calculate the water savings.  Fingers crossed our first challenge will be a success!

Each challenge is awarded points on the Water Explorer website and schools are placed on a leader board.  Having only started last week, we have accumulated 390 points and are 20th on the leader board – that is a fantastic achievement.  Well done to all involved and keep up the good work!  Together we will make a difference.
